

Dr. Oberlender was born in Philadelphia, PA and is a graduate of LaSalle College and Hahnemann Medical College. He completed his Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Virginia Affiliated Program in 1985 and was invited to join the staff at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. He served as Chief of Geriatric Medicine at the Salem VA from 1990 until 2003 and also held various other clinical, educational, and administrative positions. He established and directed the Geriatric Evaluation Unit and served as Medical Director of the Extended Care Rehabilitation Center during his years at Salem.
Dr. Oberlender retired from the VA in September 2006 and established a private consultative practice of in-home comprehensive geriatric evaluation. He also performs independent medical evaluations of seniors for estate planning and medical-legal purposes. Dr. Oberlender is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine and is an elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Oberlender is also a trained and experienced mediator/arbitrator certified by the Supreme Court of Virginia. He works with businesses, individuals, and health care providers to help resolve conflicts through alternative dispute resolution.
Dr. Oberlender and his wife live in Roanoke County where they keep and ride horses. He is an avid swimmer and woodworker and also enjoys cooking and reading. He loves to go backpacking and has hiked over 1800 miles of the Appalachian Trail.
